Seven States Represented At World Series
Junior college baseball teams from New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Maryland, Connecticut and Minnesota will receive a big Texas welcome tonight at the banquet for the NJCAA Division III World Series.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Rogers Student Center (Apache Rooms) on the campus of Tyler Junior College.

With 2007 national champion TJC unable to defend its title, Richland College is this year’s Texas representative in the eight-team tournament at Mike Carter Field.

The first game is set for 9 a.m. Saturday between Suffolk County (N.Y.) Community College and Gloucester County (N.J.) College. At noon will be last year’s runner-up, Joliet (Ill.) Junior College, against Montgomery College of Germantown, Md.

Three-time champion Richland will play Manchester (Conn.) Community College at 4 p.m., and then Hudson Valley (N.Y.) Community College will battle Ridgewater College of Willmar, Minn., at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, there will be two winner’s bracket semifinal games and two loser’s bracket elimination games.

Games will be played each day leading to Wednesday’s championship round.

Tournament passes are $20 (adults only). Daily ticket prices are $5 for adults, $3 for students with ID, and $2 for children 9-14. Eight-and-under, or Little League players in uniform, will have free admission.

The four teams making a return trip to Tyler for the World Series are Suffolk County, Joliet, Montgomery and Ridgewater. The clubs making their first trip to the Rose City for the national tournament are Richland, Manchester, Hudson Valley and Gloucester.

Notes: Each team will be allowed one hour of practice today at UT Tyler, beginning at 9 a.m. Once the tournament starts, the teams will take pregame batting practice at UT Tyler before going to Mike Carter Field for the games.
