United Way Seeks 'Day of Caring' Volunteers
Volunteer Corner — where volunteering through Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA) makes the difference in the community!
United Way: "Change Your Luck on Friday the 13th” of June by volunteering. Join the United Way for Day of Caring and pick the “done in a day project” you want to help with at a local nonprofit. The day starts with breakfast, a free T-shirt; lunch is delivered to your worksite and there is a closing celebration with food, fun and door prizes. Families, teens, community groups, employee teams from local businesses are all part of the day. To volunteer contact Vicki Harvey at 903-581-6376, Ext 211. Deadline to volunteer is June 6.
The East Texas Food Bank works daily to feed people in the community. Volunteers are needed to sort donated products Monday through Friday. This is a great opportunity for groups, families, friends, and business associates to work as a team. Individuals are always welcome as well. A volunteer is also needed on Tuesdays to answer phones and do some light office work.
If you are interested in any of the volunteer opportunities, contact Robyn at 903-597-3663 or e-mail robyn.squyres@secondharvest.org.
PATH is helping those in need to find their own way, and could not complete its mission without the assistance of volunteers. Fighting poverty is a cause for everyone. Donate your time as a volunteer by contacting Martha Marshall at 903-597-4044, Ext. 117, or e-mail martha_marshall@tylerpath.org.
Legacy Hospice: Do you want to have a positive impact on someone’s life during a period of need? Legacy Hospice is always looking for compassionate, caring people to interact with people experiencing life-ending illness or to assist in office activities. You could visit with patients in nursing facilities or at their homes and provide assistance with simple tasks, including shopping, or just talking and sharing time with them. No special skills are needed except a willingness to serve and share with others. Contact Legacy Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Fred Carl for details at 903-509-1187 or www.legacyhospice.com.
Literacy Council of Tyler needs volunteers who are interested in tutoring adults in reading, math and English as a Second Language. You do not need to be a certified teacher, and you do not need to speak a foreign language to volunteer. It only takes a couple of hours of your time per week, and LCOT will work with your schedule and interests to find the perfect opportunity for you. LCOT provides the training and materials. Call Whitney at 903-533-0330 to find out more or to register for upcoming May trainings.
Andrews Angels: Have you ever had the opportunity to help someone with a disability? Andrews Angels is a volunteer program that allows volunteers to work with the Andrews Center Community mental retardation/mental health treatment center. Many people with disabilities find themselves struggling in every-day activities that many take for granted. The Andrews Center needs volunteers to be mentors, tutors, life skills trainers and friends to children and adults with mental retardation or mental illness. Available also are clerical task such as filing, copying, imaging or answering phones.
If you are interested, contact Elwyn Welch or Samantha Schofield at 903-535-7377, e-mail at ewelch@andrewscenter.com or visit www.andrewscenter.com/angels.htm.
