  • Garden City Community College (Garden City, Kan.) announced this month Taylor Cange, of Tyler, made the Dean's Honor Roll. The Dean's Honor Roll applies to those students with 3.2 to 3.999 GPAs.

  • University of Texas at Tyler junior nursing student Oliaku I. Idigo, of Tyler, was awarded a state scholarship for disability-related leadership and service this month.

  • Idigo was awarded the 2008 Association on Higher Education and Disability in Texas scholarship in the amount of $500.

    Dane Ritcheson
  • Tyler native, Dane Ritcheson, was recently selected to receive the prestigious Hatton W. Sumners Foundation Scholarship in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom Honors Program at Howard Payne University (Brownwood).

  • Ritcheson is a junior-level student earning a business management major.

    The scholarship provides $11,000 a year for two years. Students are selected after a rigorous interview by the trustees of the Sumners Foundation.

  • Two area students were awarded a $1,000 Marsha Martin Scholarship from AgriLand, Farm Credit Services this month.

  • Ashton Brey of Lindale and Heather Hirsch, of Malakoff, recently were recognized at a regional stockholder appreciation dinner.

    Grace Elizabeth Johnson
  • Grace Elizabeth Johnson, a home schooled graduating senior, was awarded the Partners in Arts scholarship from the East Texas Community Foundation.

  • Miss Johnson has also been awarded academic and music scholarships for 2008-09 from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas where she will major in vocal performance and minor in theatre.

    Having studied voice for five years with Ms. Andrea Trent, voice instructor at Tyler Junior College, she has participated in summer voice programs at Rice University in Houston and Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio. Grace has competed in the National Association for Teachers of Singing competitions regularly placing in the semi-finals and advancing to finals winning both first and second place in her divisions.

    Grace's theatre credits include Tyler Junior College productions of Scrooge, Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland also UT Tyler production of Beauty and the Beast and Tyler Civic Theatre productions of Rip Van Winkle's Sleepy Hollow and Alice in Wonderland and also served as assistant teacher in the S.T.A.R program sponsored by Tyler Civic Theatre. She has performed community service in the east Texas area through singing in nursing homes, hurricane shelters, churches and a cancer survival camp.

    Grace is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. John Johnson of Tyler.

  • Recognized during Texas Tech commencement exercises were bachelor's degree candidates with the highest grade-point-averages in their respective colleges. Those from the Tyler area included:

  • College of Human Sciences: Megan Rachelle Felty, an early childhood major from Gun Barrel City; Tiffany Lea Kindle, an early childhood major from Tyler.

  • Sara Slimp of Tyler, a senior at Robert E. Lee High School, has received both an Academic Scholarship and Professional Leadership and Development scholarship to attend Hendrix College (Conway, Ark.) beginning in the fall of 2008. Slimp is the daughter of Mickey and Janet Slimp.

  • Charles E. Black Jr. graduated from Lyon College (Batesville, Ark.) with a bachelor of science degree in business administration during the college's 136th commencement May 10. Black is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Black.

  • South Plains College recognized outstanding students at the annual Student Awards Assembly May 1. The award winners are chosen by their departments for outstanding achievement both inside and outside of the classroom.

  • Brownsboro student Sally Ham received recognition for Outstanding Sophomore in Organic Chemistry. She is the daughter of Stephen Ham and Julie Ham.

  • The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor announced that 330 students have been listed on the spring 2008 Provost Honor Roll. Area students are: Rebekah Bridgett Knotts, Athens; Doak Robert Fleming, Chandler; Caitlin Love Murray, Kilgore; Adam Michael King, New London; and Saran Ashley Chumley, Rusk.

    Area Dean’s List students are: Luke Allen Long, Longview.


  • Honors Inductions
    Two area students were recognized recently for superior academic achievement by the National Society of High School Scholars.

    The Brook Hill School student Abigail Clements, of Tyler, and Robert E. Lee student Micheal McCaslin, of Flint were selected for membership.

    Membership in NSHSS entitles qualified students to enjoy benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.

    Formed in 2002, the NSHSS has more than 300,000 members.
