May 15: Call an Election on Non-smoking Ordinance
The recent local elections have raised, at least in my mind, the possibility that the local citizenry may not be nearly as pleased with some of the actions of the Tyler City Council as its members would like to think.

Five of the sitting councilpersons gave a ringing endorsement to Laura Corbett, only to see her lose in a McGovernesque landslide.

At the same time, the citizens of Tyler sent a strong message that less, not more, governmental control over private business is desired by resoundingly approving the revocation of the private club ordinance.

I say all that to say this. Put the recent smoking ban on hold until we can have a citywide election similar to the private club vote. Let the people truly have a say in support of, or opposition to the ban. Hold the vote the day of the November general election to assure a good turnout.

If the ban is upheld, I promise to keep my big mouth shut on this subject forever. If it is not brought to a vote and allowed to take effect, look forward to seeing my smiling face at many council meetings.
