The National Weather Service has placed much of East Texas under a severe thunderstorm warning.

The warning covers Cherokee, Smith, Gregg, Rusk and Upshur counties.

A strong thunderstorm is moving into Smith County this afternoon from the southwest.

At 5:15 p.m., the storm was 10 miles northeast of Athens moving about 43 mph, the National Weather Service said. Cities in the path of the storm are Brownsboro, Chandler and Edom.

The storm has produced small hail, winds up to 40 mph and brief heavy rainfall.
