May 12: Dangerous Trend
I read with interest Dan Thomasson's May 1 and 5 columns in the Tyler Paper.
I agree injecting the race card into this historic election campaign is the last thing this country needs. But, the author then turns around and blames Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina for doing the same for his comments, "If this party is perceived by people as having gone into a back room somewhere and brokered a nominee, that would not be good for our party."
Was it a threat to mostly white super delegates that denial of Obama at this stage would be met with a black boycott of the November election? I hardly think so. Rep. Clyburn is not the one injecting the race card into this campaign. This nations' most influential political pundits on radio, television and the Internet, knowingly or unknowingly, are sowing seeds of racism by constantly bashing Sen. Barrack Obama and praising his opponents.
I frequently listen to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, etc. These three commentators have been highlighting Re. Jeremiah's despicable hate speech delivered in 2001 for three months. Now they are trying to revitalize the former terrorist by name William Ayres to link him to Obama's past. What has the former pastor or a one time radical to do with the character of the candidate or the pertinent issues of the campaign?
Are we going to continue to talk about former pastors, rabbis, priests or imams instead of discussion the most important issues facing the American people? If we condemn all the so-called radicals of the '60s who were misguided in their actions, and believe they will never change, there will be hundreds and thousands of them now.
Most often, I enjoy Dan Thomasson's objective and unbiased analysis of current political events. What saddened me this time was his contribution to the unfortunate and dangerous trend in our political landscape.
