Elkhart Schools, Carwell Fare Well At UIL State Track Championships
The Elkhart girls gave the 2A championship a run, but ultimately ran out of steam.
Rebecca Jensen qualified in the 3200, but did not compete in the event on Friday. Jensen later finished a disappointing eighth in the 1600 Saturday, costing Elkhart valuable points.
Elkhart senior Martissa Carwell competed in an impressive four events. After taking seventh in the high jump (5-0) and fourth in the 100 (12.32), Carwell claimed the first two medals of a career in which she made multiple state appearances. She placed second in the 200 with a time of 25.12 to follow only Lexington's Elydia Farwell (24.66).
In the day's final race, Carwell anchored Elkhart's 1600 relay to a third-place finish in a time of 4:02.51. Elkhart's 1600 relay included Elise Davis, Celcy Rodgers and Rachel Teetz.
Universal City Randolph led the way in 3:58.94 and captured the 2A girls' title with 58 points. Elkhart tied for eighth with 24 points.
"I knew I came around the corner slow, but I knew I could pick my speed up. That's my strong point," Carwell said of her effort in the 200. "It felt really good. I was excited. I wanted it bad. It's my best event."
Slocum, located around eight miles east of Elkhart and just south of Palestine, secured a medal thanks to Otis Lackey, who placed third in the 800 in 2:00.34 behind Robert Lee's Josue Gallegos (1:59.76) and Valley View's Josh York (2:00.33).
Slocum's Logan Foster completed the 1600 in 4:43.93, good enough for fifth.
