Tyler ISD Teacher Of The Year Banquet On Tuesday
The Tyler ISD Teacher of the Year Banquet will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Harvey Convention Center. TISD will honor teachers for being nominated as their individual campus Teacher of the Year.
An elementary and secondary teacher of the year will be named for the 2007-08 school year. The winners will move on to the regional level.
Bonner Elementary
Dr. Kayla Price, who created a named grant through the Tyler ISD Foundation in her mother’s memory, will visit Heather Gentry’s art classroom at 10 a.m. Monday at Bonner Elementary.
The grant provided students in Ms. Gentry’s classroom with the funds needed for their “Empty Bowls” project, which raised awareness and donations for the East Texas Food Bank, St. Paul Children’s Foundation and PATH.
The grant is named the Glenna Jo Price Memorial Grant and honors the life of Glenna Jo Price, who died in Tyler in 2006 and spent her career as a librarian in Mesquite ISD. Other family members will visit as well.
Caldwell Elementary
Caldwell Elementary School will have an Olympic Field Day from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday on the football field.
Kindergarten through fourth grade will participate. Fifth-graders will oversee the activities. Some of the activities include Olympic torch relay, baseball bean bag toss, football throw, basketball shooting and sno-cone races. Parents are invited.
Clarkston Elementary
Clarkston Elementary will have Track and Field Day from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Friday on the playground and in the gym.
Students in grades pre-K through third grade will participate in the annual event. Parents are invited.
Clarkston will have its Fourth Grade Spring Concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria. Students will present, “Music of Africa and the Caribbean,” in which they will sing, dance and play instruments.
Douglas Elementary
Douglas Elementary will have Family Movie Night for kindergarten through second grades from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday. The movie, “FernGully” will be featured. Snacks may be purchased.
Jack Elementary
Jack Elementary will have its “Road Trip” Book Fair Family Night from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Students and parents will be able to build a book together.
Jones Elementary
Jones Elementary will have a retirement celebration for longtime Principal Michael Berrier from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. At 1:15 p.m., Tyler Mayor Joey Seeber will recognize Berrier.
The public is invited to attend the event, where there will be food and entertainment.
Owens Elementary
Fourth-graders at Owens Elementary will work on “Famous Texans of the Past and Present” Thursday through May 23
They will research and display Texas History beginning with the exploration and settlement of Texas to its current modern marvels. Information and graphics will be displayed in a museum where other students are invited to tour.
Rice Elementary
Rice Elementary is hosting a Spring Book Fair Monday through Friday in the library. It coincides with the “Lunch with Moms” week.
Moms are encouraged to come have lunch with their students this week.
Rice will also show support of crossing guards for the Crossing Guards Day of Appreciation on Friday.
Kindergarten Registration
Tyler ISD will have kindergarten registration from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at all campuses. If parents are not sure what school zone they reside in they may call 903-262-1017. Please bring the child’s birth certificate, Social Security card, shot records and proof of residence.
Mock Trials
Jack Elementary fourth-graders will have their Gold E. Locks mock trials starting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the cafetorium.
Bell Elementary School fourth-graders will have their Gold E. Locks mock trials at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday in their cafeteria.
The Smith County Bar Foundation is putting on mock trials in various schools in Tyler. The students perform a mock trial of the Three Bears vs. Gold E. Locks.
Students play various roles in the trial as they learn more about the court system.
After the trial is over the panel of jurors (all students) will determine whether Gold E. Locks is guilty or innocent.
Track Meet
Fourth-graders from Austin, Dixie, Douglas, Jack and Peete elementary schools will participate in track and field events from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Robert E. Lee track.
Fifth-graders from those schools will participate in track and field events from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lee track.
Dogan Middle School Blood Drive
Dogan Middle School will have a blood drive from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria.
Stewart Middle School Blood Drive
Stewart Middle School will host a blood drive from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday.
Abstinence Program
Student presentations of “A Generation at Risk … It’s Time to Talk About It…” with Virginity Rules Speaker David Mahan will take place for seventh-graders as well as juniors and seniors on Monday from noon to 1 p.m., 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the theater at Robert E. Lee High School.
On Tuesday, presentations will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Lee theater and then at the John Tyler gym from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 2 p.m.
A parent presentation will happen from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Plyler Instructional Complex.
The East Texas Abstinence Program/Longview Wellness Center and Region VII invite parents to hear David Mahan, a national youth communicator to talk about issues facing youth today.
Head Start

Education Foundation
An Education Foundation workshop for education foundations across the state will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Rose Garden Center in Tyler.
The workshop is for public education foundation board directors, trustees, superintendents, staff members and executive directors.
The agenda includes session topics on board development, employee giving, fundraising and public relations.
There will also be a session for school districts creating foundations and one for more established foundations.
All Saints Episcopal School
All Saints Episcopal School fifth- and sixth-graders will hear a presentation by Dr. Oliver Allen, a World War II veteran at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The fifth- and sixth-grade choirs will present their rendition of “Broadway Review” for the student body at 2 p.m. Tuesday and at 6 p.m. Tuesday for family and friends in the auditorium.
“A French Lesson” will be presented by Madame Gauthier and the students in 4K and Primer at 8:20 a.m. Thursday in the auditorium.
Primer students will host an Author’s Tea for parents at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the library of the Lower School.
The athletic banquet will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday in the gym.
All Saints fifth-graders will take a canoe trip down the Neches River Friday.
Fourth-graders will present “Celebrate America” at 8 a.m. Friday in the Student Center and auditorium.
Graduation for the All Saints class of 2008 is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Davis Gym.
East Texas Christian Academy
Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students from East Texas Christian Academy will travel to Camp Deer Run in Winnsboro for their annual field day.
Students will go after school Wednesday, spend the night in cabins and have a field day on Thursday. They will return by 4 p.m. Thursday.
Bishop T.K. Gorman
Bishop T.K. Gorman Catholic School will have a Middle School Sports Banquet at 6 p.m. Monday in the Milam Joseph Center.
Fifth-grade students from St. Gregory and other Tyler area schools will visit Gorman from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The Gorman High School Sports Banquet will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Milam Joseph Center
The Crusader banquet, for all incoming new students to Gorman, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Milam Joseph Center.
Grace Community School
Grace Community School will have a book fair Monday through Friday. Books will be on display throughout the school day in the commons at the elementary school.
The first-grade “Grace’s Races” will take place at 2 p.m. Monday in the elementary gym; third grade will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday; fourth grade will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday; second grade will be at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The Grace sixth- and seventh-grade awards assembly is set for 8 a.m. Tuesday in Burgess Audi-torium at the upper campus. The eighth-grade award assembly is set for 8 a.m. Thursday in Burgess Auditorium.
The Grace High School Choir Concert will be 7 p.m. Tuesday in Burgess Auditorium.
On Wednesday, a junior high drama production of two plays will be at 6 and 7 p.m. in Burgess Auditorium.
The All-Band Concert, which includes the junior high band as well as the jazz band, will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in Burgess Auditorium.
And on Friday, eighth-grade graduation is set for 8 a.m. in Burgess Auditorium. The high school awards ceremony will be at 11:45 a.m. Friday in Burgess Auditorium.
The Drum Line Concert will be presented in Burgess Auditori-um at 7 p.m. Friday.
Stepping Stone/C. Brown Middle School
Stepping Stone/C. Brown Middle School will have its annual “Jump, Shout and Boogie” performance with guitar, gymnastics and karate students at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the gym.
The Stepping Stone School choir will perform at 2:40 p.m. Thursday at the 38th annual Music Festival in Dallas at the Sandy Lake Amusement Park. Students will leave school at 11 a.m. and return at 9 p.m.
Stepping Stone will have a Parents Night Out Friday in the gym. Children must be at least 12 months old and walking to attend.
The cost is $15 per child and includes dinner. Those interested may sign up in either school office.
All Stepping Stone pre-K classes’ report cards will go home with students Friday.
Booster Club Coupons
The Robert E. Lee High School Booster Club, John Tyler High School Booster Club, Whitehouse Athletic Booster Club, Chapel Hill Bulldog Backers and the FFAs at Bullard, Lindale and Troup high schools are offering the 18th annual Tyler Area “Dining & Shopping Spree” coupon book to raise funds to help offset expenses for equipment, supplies, travel costs and scholarships, according to the club.
This year’s book features $6,000 worth of certificates for free merchandise and services, 50 percent-off discounts, and “2- for-1” dining, entertainment and golf.
Representatives will contact Tyler residents by phone in the next few months offering delivery of the money-saving coupon book. It consists of 370 offers (valid through Aug. 1, 2009) from more than 200 Tyler area businesses, including 70 restaurants.
