May 9: Sitting Council Members' Mayoral Endorsement 'Disturbing'
The "unprecedented" endorsement by current city council members of a choice for mayor is disturbing.

In the past, council members chose the mayor from among themselves to serve for a short term to preside as chairman of the council. The position was more or less passed around to every member of the council. Upon adoption by voters of a charter amendment, the position of mayor became an at-large elected position, meaning every voter in the city casts a vote to decide who the mayor will be, while the other members of council are elected from districts.

I voted for the council member from my district to work as a team member with all other members of the elected body, no matter who they may be today or in the future. The spirit of cooperation seems to be compromised with endorsements from members of an elected body who will be working with whomever the elected official will be. City employees would not be publicly endorsing candidates for council or mayor for the same reason.

There is a job to be done by council members as an elected body, setting policy for direction of our city, not endorsements for mayoral candidates or other council candidates.
