May 9: Status Quo Concern
If either Barbara Bass or Laura Corbett becomes mayor, Tyler will be well served. Both exhibit qualities and a love for Tyler that will only enhance Tyler in the future.
That said I am concerned with maintaining the status quo. I know and respect all current council members, but with last weekend's endorsements by the majority of the council members it appears the city council is trying to elect a mayor. I know they have positive reasons to support Laura Corbett, but sometimes a change is necessary.
Tyler has recently seen much change with Tyler 21 and a fresh outlook on the matter would be a benefit. Barbara Bass would provide that benefit. With her accounting skills she would provide an insight into matters others may not see. When a group becomes so geared to have a project completed they sometimes forget the vision and just work to have it approved.
Also, much has been made about the half-cent sales tax being used solely for capital improvements. I believe a portion of this money should be marked for economic development. Many cities in East Texas are growing because they have a strong economic development council and Tyler is unable to compete due to funding. With a mayor with a strong accounting background, a feasible splitting of funds between capital projects and economic development should be managed.
