Susan G. Komen Co-Chair Kristin Goodman, left, talks with Karen Durham, Grants Chair at the registration at the Broadway Square Mall Thursday. About 50 people registered Thursday morning bring the total to around 4,500.
Registration continues for the 10th annual Susan G. Komen Tyler Race for the Cure?, to be held Saturday at Bergfeld Park on South Broadway Avenue.

“The Komen Race Series is the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer. The race attracts people of all ages and fitness levels. Although most participants choose to walk or jog, elite runners are also drawn to this event. All Komen Race for the Cure? courses are certified by USA Track and Field. The first 5,000 registrants are guaranteed a T-shirt,” Komen Tyler media relations chair Ellen Peirce said.

Breast cancer survivors are celebrated through the National Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program.

“Breast cancer survivors who wish to be recognized wear complimentary pink caps and T-shirts. In addition, all participants are encouraged to wear ‘In Memory Of’ and ‘In Honor Of’ back signs, honoring loved ones for their strength and courage. This is one of the signature traditions that makes the Komen Race for the Cure Series so unique,” Mrs. Peirce said.

  • Pre-registration for the race for individuals is $25; registration on race day is $30. Race day registration begins at 6:30 a.m. For a $50 registration fee, the “In the Pink” package includes reserved parking, one race entry and a special gift.

  • Children, ages 12 and younger, can register for $15. All registered children, ages 8 and under, are invited to participate in the kid’s dash at 7:45 a.m. All will receive an award.

  • All survivors are invited to a free breakfast at 7 a.m., and survivors will form a pink ribbon for a group photo at 7:45 a.m. The 1 mile co-ed fun run/walk begins at 8 a.m., while the 5K co-ed run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. The awards ceremony starts at 9:45 a.m.

  • “Power of Ten” is new for 2008. The Race Committee invites East Texans to join them in participating in this effort to ask 10 people to donate $10 to benefit Komen projects.

  • “Since this marks the race’s 10th anniversary, it is even more meaningful. The additional benefit could add up to more than $500,000 for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment,” Mrs. Peirce said

  • If getting up early on a Saturday is not your thing or you will be out of town, you can register for the Sleep In for the Cure? program. For $35 you will be mailed a T-shirt, bib and sleep shirt.

  • Pre-registration locations and times are:

  • Today: Broadway Square Mall, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Volunteers may help decorate Bergfeld Park with large pink tulips in honor, appreciation or memory of a special one. Tulips are available at all registration sites for $10 each.

  • Bergfeld Park will be filled with many activities and booths from local and national sponsors on race day. There will be free “goodies.” The Komen boutique will be available for shoppers, and there will be a special children’s activities area. Also again this year UPS will check purses, strollers, etc., while you participate in the race. Bring your items to the UPS truck.
