Area Synagogue Celebrates Israel Independence
By PATRICK BUTLER
Religion Editor

Congregation Beth El, 1010 Charleston Drive, will hold a 60th Israel Independence Day Celebration at 6:30 p.m. today. Observances by Jewish faithful worldwide will recognize the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948.

"Israel Independence Day is a wonderful celebration," said Rabbi Neal Katz of Congregation Beth El. "And since it's the 60th anniversary it's also a time of exceptional joy and pride. We are proud to be part of a program allowing us to receive the opening ceremonies of Independence Day in Israel."

The ceremonies in Israel will be received through a special Internet feed at 7 p.m., said Katz. The public is invited to meet in the Social Hall of Congregation Beth El at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and a brief discussion before the netcast. The anniversary ceremonies are normally an hour long. The event is free.

"The ceremonies include speeches, a candle lighting ceremony, beautiful music and the singing of the Israeli National Anthem, Ha Tikvah," said Katz. The netcast will be subtitled in English.

"I lived in Israel for 2 1/2 years," Katz said, "mostly in Jerusalem. I have a deep connection with the land and the people."

And that connection is not only felt by Jewish faithful, he said.

"Israel is a special place for billions of people around the globe," Katz said. "It's a country of modern development and political struggles. It is a spiritual home for many religious communities and each year on Independence Day, Yom Ha 'atzmauf, the country gathers to reflect on past achievements and challenges that lie ahead. It's always a day of celebration to me."
