May 6: Need Fresh Thinking
Not being personally acquainted with Barbara Bass or Laura Corbett, I was undecided about the mayoral race until Sunday. I must say I've heard many positive things, and no negatives, about both ladies.
However, in the 28 years I've lived in Tyler I've noticed a pattern in city government - a person is elected to city council, serves two or three terms and then runs for mayor. I've long feared Tyler city government is in danger of becoming a victim of "in-breeding."
I think this was proven when Sunday's paper had a front page story about all but one of the current council members endorsing Laura Corbett. I am aware of Ms. Corbett's "experience argument" and experience has some advantages. However, I've seen experience lead to the "we've never done it that way" syndrome which tends to stifle creative thinking and new methodology.
Because I feel we need some new blood and fresh thinking at city hall, I will vote for Barbara Bass.
