Winona Junior Earns Eagle Scout
WINONA — Winona High School Junior Zachary Sawyer, 16, achieved Eagle Scout in September and will receive his Eagle Badge on Saturday.
Sawyer has been involved in scouting for 10 years, beginning as Tiger Cub at Winona Elementary. As a Boy Scout, he attended summer camp at Camp Pioneer in Arkansas, Camp Alexander in Colorado, Camp Hale in Oklahoma, Camp Pirtle near Carthage and the ultimate, Philmont Scout Ranch.
Zach earned 43 merit badges as a Boy Scout and has served as Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe, Quarter Master, Chaplain and other duties. He also is a member of Order of the Arrow.
Sawyer’s Eagle project was done at First Baptist Church South Campus, where he cleared a walking trail. Downed logs were used to line the trail, and some trees were used for mulch and to pave the trail.
He also labeled several trees and shrubs.
He will receive his badge at Fairwood Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Sawyer also helps with SCADDA Camp and will serve as a counselor this year. He has worked with PATH Brown Bag program, in which he assisted in delivering groceries to elderly families.
Sawyer is a member of the Winona High marching band, regional band and participates in UIL social studies and current issues events, in which he recently placed second in the district meet.
He is a member of First Baptist Church where he is part of the media team and helps operate cameras during Sunday morning services.
