East Texas Trekkers Schedule Walk At Lake O' The Pines
The East Texas Trekkers will host a 5K (3.1 miles) and a 10K (6.2 miles) walk on Saturday at Lake O' The Pines, Brushy Creek Recreation Area. The walk includes two 5K loops which consist of a combination of trails and park roads, Trekkers spokesperson Jan Wood said.

Brushy Creek Recreation Area is located off Farm-To-Market Road 726 east of Jefferson. Lake O' the Pines is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lake.

Participants can start anytime from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and walkers must complete the walk by 2:30 p.m. The walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. A walking stick could be useful on this walk, Ms. Wood said.

The event is open to the public.

"You do not have to be a member of the East Texas Trekkers to participate in this or any of our events. We do ask that all participants bring some canned goods to be donated to PATH after the walk," Ms. Wood said.

There is a participation fee of $3 per walker over the age of 12. There is also an "A" Award available for an additional $4 for those who wish to purchase the award.

Membership in The East Texas Trekkers is $15 the first year and $10 each year thereafter.

All participants must carry a start card, which is available at the starting point and must be returned upon completion of the walk to the finish table. All participants must also sign a liability release form to participate in this walk. An adult must accompany children under age 12.

Water and candy will be available at the start and checkpoint; however, walkers should carry extra water with them on the trail. Pets are allowed, but must be on a short leash at all times and clean-up is required. Restrooms are available near the start/finish point.

The walk will be held unless extreme weather conditions are in the area.
