Spirit Of Tyler All-Star Cheer, Dance Teams Take Awards
The Spirit of Tyler All-Star Cheer and Dance Teams concluded its 2007-08 season March 1 at the Cheer Power Small Gym Championship in Belton. The Senior Coed Hip Hop Team won the Grand Champion Award along with the Best Choreography award.
The Senior Hip Hop Team along with the Mini Hip Hop Team were awarded first place. Also winning first place for cheer was the Senior Team, the Elite Team and the Large Coed Team Squad, who also won a Showmanship Award. The Mini cheer team placed second. Spirit of Tyler also won the Crowd Participation Award.
Earlier in the season, the squads attended the United Cheer competition in Kilgore where all the Spirit of Tyler Teams earned first place wins. Individual winners were Courtney Byrd, best female jumps; Scotty Brown, best male tumble pass and best dance couple; Meagan Williams, best dancer; Jessica Brown, best dance couple; Courtney Harris, best female tumble pass; and Kaston Kinade, best male jumps.
At the Cheerpower Regionals in Dallas in December, all Spirit of Tyler dance and cheer squads placed first. The Senior Coed Hip Hop Team won the Grand Championship award. The Mini cheer team participated as a Show Team at this event.
In February, the teams attended the Cheer Power National Championship in San Antonio and the S.O.S Championships in Frisco. At the Cheer Power National event the Large Coed Team placed first, and the Senior team placed third.
At the S.O.S. competition, all dance teams were awarded first place wins along with the Large Coed cheer squad, Senior cheer squad and Elite cheer squad that also had the highest score of the day. The Mini Team placed third. Spirit of Tyler was awarded $500 as the winner of the Program Champion Award for having the total combined highest scores during this event. The cash award will be used for this year’s senior scholarship, according to Melinda McNatt, Spirit of Tyler owner/coach.
