Students Awarded East Texas State Fair Academic Rodeo Scholarships
Eleven middle and high school students were the first recipients of the East Texas State Fair Academic Rodeo scholarship awards presented April 5 at the annual Academic Rodeo Awards celebration. To be eligible for scholarship awards students must have received first, second or third place in one of the 2008 Academic Rodeo contests.

Middle school students applied for one of six scholarships presented by the East Texas State Fair. The winners announced on Saturday were:

Myriah Hull, Malakoff Middle School, Malakoff, $1,000 scholarship

Marina Martinez, Moore MST Magnet School, Tyler, $750 scholarship

Meredith Oliver, Hubbard Middle School, Tyler, $750 scholarship

Rocquel Pettigrew, Moore MST Magnet School, Tyler, $500 Scholarship

Justin Seitz, Hogg Middle School, Tyler, $500 scholarship

Claire Shepherd, Rusk County 4-H, $500 scholarship

High school students in grades nine through 12 applied for one of five scholarships. Three awards were underwritten by Oncor. These winners were:

Bethany Johnson, Lindale High School, Lindale, $2,000 scholarship

Dylan Lee, West Rusk CCISD, New London, $1,500 scholarship

Cessley Vestal, West Rusk CCISD, New London, $1,500 scholarship

Two awards were underwritten by the Tyler Lions Club. These winners were:

Kasi Jo Dinger, Lindale High School, Lindale, $1,000 scholarship;

Kaitlyn Patterson, East Texas Christian Academy, Tyler, $1,000 scholarship;

The scholarship winners were recognized during the presentation of approximately 300 awards.

Contests in the Academic Rodeo were presented by the East Texas State Fair during November, January and February. The annual academic event is in its 18th year. The awards presented include:
