A juried student art exhibition is scheduled to begin Monday and continue through Aug. 1 in the Meadows Gallery on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler, publicity officials announced.

The exhibition will feature works from students in the campus community. Each student may submit up to three works, either two-dimensional or three-dimensional to be juried by the UT Tyler art faculty.

Awards, in the form of cash prizes, include best of show, best two-dimensional work, best three-dimensional work and several honorable mention awards.

During this year's opening reception, the first Christopher Lyon Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a promising art student chosen by a faculty selection committee from the department of art and art history department.

The reception is scheduled from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2. The public is invited.

Tyler Junior College will host its annual jazz festival Friday and Saturday, with a little help from featured artist Lou Marini, according to publicity officials.

Jazz saxophonist Marini has played with the Saturday Night Live Band, the Blues Brothers Band, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich and Doc Severinsen.

Marini will perform with the TJC jazz ensembles in two free concerts, set 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday in Wise Auditorium, on the TJC main campus.

The TJC jazz ensembles brought home multiple awards from the Texas State Jazz Festival held in February in San Marcos, and TJC Jazz Ensemble I was the only college group to receive an Outstanding Performance Award.

The TJC jazz studies program is under the direction of Heather Mensch.

The Tyler Community Band will present "Honoring Richard Highfill," a free concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 6, in Vaughn Auditorium in the Cowan Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler, publicity officials announced.

Selections from the program include "Procession of the Nobles,'' "First Suite in Eb for Military Band,'' "National Emblem March'' and "Stars and Stripes Forever.''

The band will premiere the march "King Richard,'' composed by UT Tyler Associate Professor of Music and Music Department Coordinator, Dr. Jeffrey Emge, written in memory of Highfill. Announcer for the evening will be Dr. Tom Fernandez, Professor Emeritus of the College of Business and Technology at UT Tyler. Dr. Fernandez served as the band's announcer in its early years, and will reprise that role in this concert. The Tyler Community Band is made up of business and medical professionals, teachers, music educators, retirees and advanced students.
