Rio Grande Turkey Season Ending
The Rio Grande turkey season closes in 54 so-called South Texas counties Sunday.
Ironically some of those South Texas counties are well up in the Texas Hill Country where there is a good chance that gobbling activity is just peaking.
The Hill Country counties, which include Gillespie, Kerr, Comal, Blanco, Sutton and Val Verde, got lumped into South Texas this season when the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department went back to a two-zone season for Rio Grande turkeys.
It hasn't been popular with some hunters, but because the change was somewhat hidden, a change couldn't be made until the 2010 season if the department wants to make a correction.
Also, the eastern turkey season will be closing Wednesday.
