Tyler-Area Employment Rate Holding Steady
From Staff, Wire Reports

Tyler’s employment rate remained at 95.6 percent in March, unchanged from February, the Texas Workforce Commission reported on Friday.

The rate in March 2007 was 96 percent.

Statewide, however, the rate dipped a 10th of a percentage point from February, to 95.7 percent.

The TWC said an uptick in hiring in Texas was offset by an increase in people looking for work. The ranks of the unemployed grew by an estimated 15,400 in March, to 494,400.

And initial claims for unemployment benefits rose 8.5 percent, to 56,901 in March.

However, the March employment rate was only slightly lower than February’s 95.9 percent, which was a record high, and the March figure remained above the national average of 94.9 percent.

The number of jobs in Texas has grown 2.1 percent since March 2007, compared to a national increase of 0.4 percent in the same period.

In Tyler, nonagricultural employment grew by 800 jobs in March. Leisure and hospitality gained 200 jobs and government. The categories of education and health services; professional and business services; financial activities; trade, transportation and utilities; and mining and construction each gained 100 jobs.

Longview saw a 96.3 percent employment rate last month, up slightly from 96.2 percent in February. In March 2007, the area also had a 92.2 percent rate. Like Tyler, total nonagricultural employment increased by 800 jobs last month.

Trade, transportation and utilities was the single largest job-gaining category, at 300 jobs.

The Workforce Commission said Texas employers added 13,500 jobs in March.

The biggest gain was in the trade, transportation and utilities sector, which added 7,800 jobs. Leisure and hospitality added 4,300 jobs, according to the commission.

Smaller gains were reported in the education and health services sector and in natural resource and mining, which includes the oil and gas industry, the commission said.

“Our Texas economy continues to show significant underlying strength with gains of nearly 40,000 jobs during the last three months,” Workforce Commission Chairman Tom Pauken said.

Midland had the highest March employment rate in the state, at 97.4 percent. The lowest employment rate area was McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, at 93.6 percent.

The statewide numbers were adjusted for seasonal trends in hiring and firing, which most economists believe gives a better picture of the job market.

Local figures are not seasonally adjusted.
