Robert E. Lee Senior To Attend Naval Academy After Graduation
Robert E. Lee High School senior Sarah Pritchard received an appointment to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and will report in July.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn nominated Miss Pritchard in January. Typically, approximately 4,000 candidates receive nominations and 1,500 appointments are given.

Miss Pritchard is the daughter of Daryl and Christine Pritchard and Beth Marshall and Anthony Wilgus.


Tyler ISD Notes Excellence
Tyler ISD has announced:

  • Bonner Elementary school teacher Holly Chilek was recognized as the Academic Rodeo East Texas educator of the year.

  • Hubbard Middle School student Meredith Oliver received a first-place art medal and a $750 scholarship for her pencil drawing in the Academic Rodeo.

  • HMS student Blake Eubanks won a $50 savings bond in the Smith County Art Contest for his work using the theme Safety in our Environment.

  • The HMS sixth- through eighth-grade industrial technology students constructed Styrofoam airplanes and held a flying contest with the Civil Air Patrol and were judged on design, workmanship and distance.

  • Sixth-grade winners were: Fourth place, Chalsea King and Bre Payton; third place, Matthew Conin and William Etuk; second place, Brandon Perez and Darion Jackson; first place, Jordan Reasoner and Mickey Mostyn.

    Seventh-grade winners: Fourth place, Blake Edwards and Andrew Speck; third place, Josh Smith and Austin Davis; second place, Tucker Boyd and Ricardo Rodrigues; first place, Caleb Latson and Chance Busby.

    Eighth-grade winners: Fourth place, Travis Yanker; third place, Alexis Rome, second place Idong Okon; and first place, Austin Shipp.

  • Robert E. Lee High School Color Guard competed at the Marching Auxiliaries National Competition in Fort Worth and ensemble division seniors Allison Hughes and Kaylee Garvey and junior Chelsea Thompson won second place overall, along with a superior rating.

  • Allison Hughes, junior Haleigh Mosley, sophomores Lexxy LeBlanc, Cayla Thompson and junior Cheyenne Johnson received a superior rating for small ensemble.

    Juniors Chelsea Thompson and Miss Mosley received superior ratings on solos, as did Miss LeBlanc.

    In the Color Guard team division, Tyler Lee Color Guard received a superior rating and fourth place overall.

  • The Moore Robotics Team won second place at the State TCEA LEGO Robotics Competition. The "Smart Escape" emergency fire escape system was designed by Nick Dobbins, Fernando Guzman, Marina Martinez, Priyal Patel, Puja Patel and Antonio Valterria. The team competed against 33 other teams and received a trophy, medals and $150 for more LEGO equipment.

  • The Tyler Museum of Art awarded merits of honor at the Fourth Annual High School Art Exhibition.

  • Martin Reina, of Robert E. Lee High School, and Arnold Mateos and Melissa Weber, of John Tyler High School were awarded for their work.


    Bullard Junior Eyes State UIL
    BULLARD - Bullard High School junior Judson Watkins will compete in the state UIL meet May 2 in Austin after placing third in social studies at the regional meet April 12 in Commerce.

    Judson was part of a social studies team that placed second in district and third at the regional meet.

    Junior Haley Bauman placed fourth in feature writing at the regional meet and will be an alternate at state.

    Other qualifiers were Kory Prince, computer applications and science), Heather Berryhill, Jessie Gore and Chelsea Lueck (social studies) and Bailey Coerver (ready writing).


    Kilgore College Takes Honors
    KILGORE - Five Kilgore College students won seven Gold Circle Awards in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association annual competition.

    Melissa Greene won first place for general or humor column writing and a certificate of merit for personality profile writing. She shared certificates of merit with sophomores Craig Cooper and Nathan Cain.

    Sophomore Jacob Adkisson won third in compeition and a certificate of merit.

    Sophomore Sara Knight also won a certificate of merit.

    The Flare placed second in the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors nondaily collegiate category.

    The Flare also won Division III Sweepstakes in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition.

    Anna Katzkova, Kyle Shipp, Sara Knight and J.C. Derrick all placed in TIPA writing and editing competitions.
