Local Students Win Essay Contest

At left, fourth-grade home schooler Benjamin White won first place in a recent history essay contest for the Charles G. Davenport Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, as did Bishop T.K. Gorman seventh-grader Rachel Carney in her age group. White won for his entry, “The Father of Texas — Stephen Fuller Austin,” and Carney won for “Helpful Rangers and Their History.” Both students received $100 savings bonds. DRT Education Chair Betty Stokes is pictured with White. DRT President Johnnie McWilliams is pictured with Carney.
