LETU Math Teams Wins State
LONGVIEW - LeTourneau University mathematics students won first place at a statewide college competition at Tarleton State University in Stephenville last week, beating teams from 12 other universities across the state, according to a written statement from the university.
It was the first time LeTourneau University had entered a team in the College Calculus Bowl held by the Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America.
Winning the competition required both speed and correctness, as the first team to correctly answer a problem received a higher number of points for that problem than any other team. Any team answering incorrectly had a point deducted for that problem.
Team A (first place) competitors were Sam Hovan, sophomore math major from Elkhart, Ind.; three Chris "Manhawk" Manhave, junior math major from Longview; Caleb Fast, sophomore math major from Longview; and Stephen Camp, sophomore electrical engineering major from Longview.
Competing on a second team were Joshua Harper, sophomore electrical engineering major from Atlanta, Texas; Frew Schmidt, senior computer science and math major from Ocean Springs, Miss.; and Jon Hersack, junior computer science engineering major from San Antonio.
