Texas College plans 'Women Changing The World' Activities
CADE
Texas College will honor four women who have have made outstanding contributions in their communities during the Women Changing the World Week, beginning Monday and continuing through Friday, organizers said.
A recognition program is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Texas College Martin Hall Auditorium. A luncheon for the honorees will be held immediately following the program, in the Willie Lee Glass Community Development Center. BARBARA CADE
Barbara Cade has been an English instructor at Texas College since 1993. She re-ceived a bachelor's of art degree in Eng-lish education from the Uni-versity of Neb-raska and a master's of art in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in En-glish, history and journalism from The University of Texas at Tyler.
Mrs. Cade serves on several committees and is an active member of the Faculty Senate. Mrs. Cade also is the coach of the Texas College Honda All-Star Team, which competes annually in the National College Quiz Bowl tournament. She is a lay leader, a member of the worship committee and the choir at Lake Palestine United Methodist Church. She also serves as the secretary of the Edom Historical Society.
COBBINS
JENNIFER COBBINS
Jennifer Cobbins is the publisher of the PulseTyler magazine which she launched in January 2006. Through the magazine, she makes a difference in the lives of people by publishing original articles, interviews, advice, ideas and giving new perspectives, event organizers said.
Mrs. Cobbins earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado and has worked in both broadcast and print media. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a board member of Jack and Jill of America, Tyler Parks, Tyler Visitors and Convention board, and East Texas Community's Foundation.
DURDEN
VERNA DURDEN
Verna Rockins Durden is a 1966 graduate of Texas College. She was the second African American female police officer in the Dallas Texas Police Depart-ment. Mrs. Durden re-ceived numerous commendations and awards for her outstanding service. She retired in 2004 after 36 years of service. Mrs. Durden and her oldest daughter are both 11-year cancer survivors. In 2003, she and her daughter started the American Cancer Society Relay for life fundraiser in Mesquite, and raised more than $60,000. Mrs. Durden also has done volunteer work with the Dallas Public Library, Girl Scouts and Homeowners Association.
NUNN
MARIA EMMA NUNN
Maria Emma Nunn is a 1962 graduate of John Tyler High School. She majored in Spanish and history and earned her bachelor's degree in 1966 and master's degree in 1967 from Stephen F. Austin Univer-sity. Mrs. Nunn also attended The University of Texas at Tyler where she obtained her bilingual and English as a second language degrees. Mrs. Nunn has taught at many schools and colleges in East Texas including Texas College and is currently a Spanish teacher at John Tyler High School. She has conducted workshops in English as a Second Language and she volunteers as an interpreter for schools and organizations.
Mrs. Nunn has received many honors and awards for her outstanding contributions to the community as an educator.
