‘Tyler’ Topic Of Historical Society Meeting
The Smith County Historical Society announces that Robert Reed, author of the new book “Tyler,” is the scheduled guest speaker for Tuesday’s meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in the second-floor Payne Auditorium of the Carnegie History Center, 125 S. College Ave., Tyler.
His program will be a PowerPoint overview of his photographic history book, which was recently released by Arcadia Publishing and includes 230 vintage photographs covering Tyler’s history from founding through the 1960s.
While the sources of the images are numerous, including Reed’s personal collection, a majority came from the Society’s archives. The meeting will also include a book signing, with copies available for purchase.
A lifelong resident of Tyler, Reed graduated from Tyler Junior College and The University of Texas at Tyler. His interest in local history led to his large collection of Tyler memorabilia, which has been covered in the past by the Tyler Morning Telegraph, the local CBS TV station, Texas Highways magazine, and an earlier society meeting.
After serving for 2 1/2 years as the society’s vice president of museum/archives, Reed is currently president. He is also a member of the Tyler Tap Chapter of the Cotton Belt Rail Historical Society.
The society’s monthly meetings are always open and free to anyone interested in Smith County history.
Contact the Smith County Historical Society at 903-592-5993 for further information on this event.
Copies of “Tyler” are currently available for purchase at the Carnegie History Center, which serves as the society’s museum and archives. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
