Eltife Awarded
The Texas Association of Business has named state Sen. Kevin Eltife a “Fighter for Free Enterprise, as a result of his “stellar pro-business, pro-Texas voting record,” according to TAB President Bill Hammond.

“We thank you for your hard work promoting a better business climate that will ensure that more jobs, especially good-paying jobs, are created and retained in Texas, Hammond said.

Phillips Announces New Committee
Smith County Commissioners Court Precinct 3 candidate Terry Phillips has announced the leaders of his “Get Out the Vote” Committee: Dean Childres, R.C. “Bobby” Curtis, Sharon Guthrie, Gene Shull and Laura Taff.

As one of the leaders of the opposition to the November 2007 jail bond election, Sharon Guthrie says, “Terry Phillips gathered more than 250 signatures from citizens to get his name on the ballot. That showed us his willingness to listen to the people. He opposed the raises for the county judge and commissioners and the November jail bond election from the very beginning. Mr. Phillips also understands that the people want leaders who are prepared to make the hard decisions. Terry will not abstain from voting on the budget and pay raises as the incumbent did.”

Phillips faces incumbent Commissioner Bobby Van Ness, Toby Cross and Ken Langley in the March 4 Republican primary for the seat.

Forum Slated The Smith County Republican Women will host a candidate forum Thursday at Traditions Restaurant, 6205 S. Broadway Ave.

The forum will include constable candidates from precincts 2 and 3. Confirmed candidates include incumbent Frank Creath and Todd Thoene for Precinct 2, and Terry Brunk, Gary Guthrie, Rod Langlinais and Dustin Rust for Precinct 3.

Lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. and the forum will begin at noon. Call 903-581-6795 for further information.

Great Decisions Discussions
The Great Decisions discussion series continues at noon on Wednesdays at the Tyler Public Library.

Each of the weekly meetings will address a current foreign policy topic, with one or more experts on the subject leading the discussions. The series is part of a national effort launched in 1954 by the Foreign Policy Association.

In Tyler, the event is sponsored by the American Association of University Women — Tyler Branch, the League of Women Voters of Tyler/Smith County and the Tyler Public Library.

Dr. Robert Sterken, associate professor of political science at the University of Texas at Tyler, serves as chair of the Great Decisions steering committee.

For more information, call 903-565-6655. Upcoming discussions include:

  • “Talking to Our Enemies,” Feb. 20, Dr. Michael Colatrella, associate director and senior lecturer SMU Center for Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management in Plano: How the United States deals with international challenges often depends on how it engages with allies, as well as enemies. How should the United States deal with countries such as Cuba, North Korea and Iran? What approaches should the United States take with groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah?

  • “U.S.-China Trade Policy,” Feb. 27, Scott Myers, vice president-Supply Chain, Trane Residential Systems: Recent product safety scares have thrown the spotlight on the enormous role China plays in supplying products to the United States. Could the large and growing trade imbalance with China have an adverse effect on the U.S. economy? What role does the undervalued Chinese currency play?

  • Women’s League Holding Forum
The League of Women Voters of Tyler/Smith County has scheduled a candidate forum for 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the Tyler Public Library.

Candidates for Smith County sheriff and county commissioner, as well as state district judge, are invited. Primary Elections Getting Closer The March 4 primary elections are approaching.

Offices up for election include county commissioner precincts 1 and 3, tax assessor/collector, sheriff, all constables, some state district judges, all state representatives and all U.S. House of Representative seats.

    Important dates:
  • Feb. 19-29: Early voting.

  • March 4: Election Day.
