TALL Program
Class X of the Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership (TALL) program will have its East Texas agriculture seminar this week.

The class will tour a rose growing and packing operation, a large plant farm and a commercial beef cattle ranch. It will then go to Nacogdoches and visit the Pilgrims Poultry Processing Plant.

The class will continue its education with the many operations of the timber industry by visiting a logging operation, a saw mill, the Sabine National Forest and the Piney Woods Conservation Center on the Sam Rayburn Reservoir.

State Sen. Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville, will be keynote speaker at a reception at the Holiday Inn Select hotel in Tyler, 6 p.m. Tuesday. Approximately 175 business and governmental leaders will be at the reception, seminar organizers say.

Build East Texas, a Cooperative Extension program, will present awards to recognize current and past leaders of East Texas agriculture.

TALL is a competitive leadership development program for men and women in the early stages of their career. The class consists of up to 25 people who come from every sector of agriculture and all parts of Texas.

The two-year program includes seminars with experts and on-site tours throughout the United States and other countries.

More information is available at http://tall.tamu.edu or by contacting TALL at 7607 Eastmark Drive, Suite 101A, College Station, 77840-4027, or by calling 979-845-1554 or by e-mailing j-mazurkiewicz@tamu.edu.

HOTEL CONSTRUCTION
Many folks have probably seen the Value Place Hotel going up at 3210 SSW Loop 323. It is one of several, either under construction or in the planning phases, in the Rose City.

The extended stay hotel chain is on track to open in May 2008, said Mike Ferraro, managing director of SPIH Tyler LLC, the hotel's owner. It will be managed by Value Place Property Management.

Value Place is a new concept in the extended stay hotel category, and Ferraro says it offers guests a surprisingly affordable, simple, clean and secure lodging option.

Jack DeBoer developed the brand in 2003 to serve a growing number of small business owners and consultants who travel on their own expenses.

It was created by the management team that developed Residence Inn (now owned by Marriott), Summerfield Suites (a part of the Hyatt hotel chain), and Candlewood Suites (an Intercontinental hotel chain company).

In addition to serving business travelers, the extended-stay hotel chain also serves families moving to a new community and looking for a home. Other guests include tourists and people who need an affordable extended-stay hotel for temporary job assignments, while visiting family and friends or while in town for medical treatment.

Value Place Inn will offer three room types - a one-bed studio, a studio sleeper with full-size bed and pull-out sofa or studio double rooms. Each will be equipped with a kitchen that includes a full-size refrigerator, two-burner stovetop and microwave. Rates will start at $179 per week.

NOT MUCH CHANGE
Researchers with the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University say we can get ready for more of the same news in 2008.

"Stories that made headlines in 2007 will continue playing out over the next year," Dr. Mark Dotzour, the center's chief economist, said, adding that this applies to the housing market.

"Many questions remain," Dotzour said. "When will the market bottom out? What will the signs be?"

The center said it plans to follow stories that include the mortgage market's response to the threat of aggressive regulation of the mortgage industry and how the global banking system will handle the re-pricing of mortgage debt.

Dotzour said the commercial real estate sector will also take the spotlight.
