Tyler's Flynn, Black Hope To Lead LSU To National Championship
CIRON BLACK
For the second time in three years, Tyler will be well-represented in the Bowl Championship Series national title game.

Tylerites Matt Flynn and Ciron Black will try to bring a national championship to Louisiana State University on Monday when the Tigers meet Ohio State in New Orleans.

In the 2006 national championship game, Tyler's Tim Crowder, Aaron Ross, Matt Melton, Matthew Melton, Nic Redwine and Stephen Lane were all members of the Texas Longhorns. They helped Texas defeat Southern California, 41-38, to win the national title at the Rose Bowl.

Crowder and Ross were starters for the Longhorns, while Melton received significant playing time. All three played for John Tyler High School.

Now, it's Flynn and Black's time. Both are starters for Louisiana State and were stars for Robert E. Lee High School.

Flynn is the starting quarterback for the Tigers, while Black starts at left offensive tackle.

For the first time since the Tigers' second game of the season against Virginia Tech, Flynn said he is finally healthy.

Flynn is a gritty player, having displayed that in high school.

As a senior, he led the Red Raiders to the semifinals of the Class 5A Division I playoffs despite having a broken foot the final four games. During that season he completed 124 of 206 pass attempts for 1,679 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 305 yards and scored 12 TDs.

This season, he has led the Tigers to the national title game thanks to that toughness. He has connected on 183 of 232 pass attempts for 17 TDs. He has also rushed for 207 yards and scored four TDs.

Flynn has been a star as a senior, which featured a 22-yard TD pass to Demetrius Byrd with one second left to lift the Tigers to a 30-24 victory over Auburn.

He also led a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Alabama.

Flynn hopes his previous bowl experience carries over to the Louisiana Superdome.

As a sophomore, Flynn was voted Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl as he led LSU to a 40-3 rout of Miami in Atlanta.

Flynn, who is majoring in communication studies and has been a member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, is the son of Alvin and Ruth Flynn of Tyler. He has two brothers - Adam and Bill - and two sisters - Rebecca and Amanda.

He got his quarterbacking skills from his father as the elder Flynn was the signal caller for Baylor from 1967-69.

In 2003, Flynn was a red-shirt freshman as the Tigers defeated Oklahoma, 21-14, in the Sugar Bowl for the national championship. Flynn held the clipboard that season.

Now, as a senior Flynn will be on the field and wants to hold the national championship trophy high.

When Flynn was a junior in high school, Black was blocking for him.

Now, the sophomore is doing the same in Baton Rouge.

Black has been instrumental in the Tigers averaging 38.7 points and 218.9 rushing yards per game. Also, the Tigers are averaging 229.2 yards passing.

Last year, Black was a first-team freshman All-American as voted by the Football Writer's Association and the College Football News. He was also on the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll.

This year, the 6-5, 320-pounded earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors.

Black is known as an intense competitor who excels at both run and pass blocking.

Black, who is majoring in business, is the son of Ronnie and Sandra Black of Tyler. He has three siblings - Kawune, Quinton and Shamia.

As a senior, Black helped REL win the Class 5A Division I state championship in a dome - the Alamodome in San Antonio.

As a sophomore, he will be in a dome again - the Louisiana Superdome. He hopes the result is the same.
