Heritage, legacy and tradition were key words Friday evening as Texas Rose Festival President James Chester Wynne III announced Sarah Elizabeth Clyde, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Clyde IV, of Tyler, will reign as queen of the 2008 Texas Rose Festival.

Wynne spoke during a press conference at the Tyler Rose Museum before the Winter Gala fundraiser to benefit the museum.

Miss Clyde will serve as an ambassador for the festival and the rose industry for the year, which will be highlighted by the 75th Texas Rose Festival, to be held Oct. 16-19 in Tyler.

Miss Clyde, whose family has a longstanding relationship with the festival throughout its 75-year history, said words could not express "how honored and thrilled" she is to be chosen to serve as the 2008 rose queen, and it is "a privilege I will not take for granted."

"Let us remember to express our gratitude to the Lord for one of His most beautiful creations," Miss Clyde said.

Wynne also announced Elizabeth Katelyn Horton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth D. Horton, of Tyler, will serve as duchess of the rose growers for 2008.

Miss Horton, whose family roots go deep in the rose-growing industry, said she is "extremely honored to have the privilege of serving" as the duchess of the rose growers for 2008. She said it is her turn to "embrace this legacy" as she becomes an ambassador for the rose industry and the Rose Festival.

Wynne said "A Royal Tribute to the Rose" will be the theme for the 75th festival.

"From roses to royalty, the 2008 Texas Rose Festival will be a celebration of tradition and community spirit that began as a dream in 1933. It will be a magical, memorable tribute to the legacy of the Texas Rose Festival, the Tyler rose-growing industry, and our national flower, the rose," Wynne said.
