Morris Signs Gymnastic Scholarship With Kentucky
By CHRIS PARRY
Staff Writer
On a starry summer night Storey Morris received the sign she hoped for.
Grappling with the decision of accepting a full gymnastics scholarship to either Oklahoma or Kentucky, Morris was driving home when she stopped and pulled over.
"I got out of the car and laid down on the ground and was looking up at the stars and praying," Morris said.
"I said, 'God, if it's your will for me to go to Kentucky, then show me a shooting star.'
"Not even a second later, I saw a shooting star and I felt so much peace then."
Wednesday at the Texas East Gym, wearing at Kentucky T-shirt, Morris made her choice official, signing a scholarship letter of intent to join the Wildcats.
Morris was surrounded by nearly 200 fellow gymnasts, family and friends for a news conference of sorts.
Texas East Gymnastics head coach Martin Parsley began the proceedings by saying, "It's a proud day for us at Texas East," Parsley continued. "Storey has been doing this for a long time and doing a great job."
Morris attends Kings Academy School, which was well represented at the signing as several classmates were decked out in Kentucky blue, while others had their faces painted with blue "Ks" on them.
"I did not expect any of this," said Morris, who is ranked as one of the top senior gymnasts in the nation.
"My mom actually came up to my school today and brought me a cookie cake and surprised me. Everybody was wearing Kentucky shirts at school today, it was just a lot of support that I guess I know I had, but didn't really realize."
Morris won the USAG Regional all-around title and placed sixth in floor exercise and ninth in vault at the USAG National Meet.
In her lone local appearance March 11 at the inaugural Rose City Classic Gymnastics Invitational, Morris slayed the competition, earning a first-place medal in all of the events to also be named Level 10 Sr. A all-around champion.
Morris hopes to help Kentucky challenge two-time defending national champion Georgia.
Parsley believes she will.
"She should make a difference in their program," Parsley said.
