The roses were still in bloom to greet visitors Sunday, as the 74th Texas Rose Festival came to an end.

“I think it was successful. The crowd was really good on Friday and Saturday,” Susan Travis with the Convention and Visitors Bureau said.

The good attendance, which many attributed to the weather, carried on into Sunday with organizers estimating several hundred visitors for the day.

Blake Stowe, of Tyler, said he has attended many of the festivals, but thought this year was the best he’s seen.

“It was very nice. I thought everyone did a wonderful job. Then again, I have a daughter in it this year, and I’m a little partial. I may not be a real good judge,” he joked.

Ms. Travis, who has worked multiple festivals, said her favorite part of each year is the Queen’s Tea on Friday.

“The little girl’s just love it. They get so excited, and it’s so cute to watch,” Ms. Travis said.

While the parade, coronation and tea were a hit, others came exclusively for the foliage.

Two sisters from Wisconsin fawned over the varieties of roses displayed inside the Rose Garden Center.

Next to each rose on display rested a card listing the roses’ name, hybrid and where they could be located in the garden.

“Can you believe that color,” one said pointing at a yellow hybrid.

Louan and Bill Talley were on their way back to Oklahoma City from Florida when they decided to make a stop in Tyler for the Texas Rose Festival.

The husband and wife were in town for the Azalea Trails when they learned of the Texas Rose Festival.

“We like roses, and flowers, grass, trees and pretty much anything green,” Talley said.

His wife nodded in agreement as she browsed through the stacks of brochures at the welcoming table.

“This is our first time here, so first we’re going to tour the garden,” he said.

Already outside, walking hand-in-hand through the rose garden, was Katie Branch and her husband, Robert, who made a day trip from Dallas to see the final day of the festival.

“It’s beautiful,” Mrs. Branch said, carefully inspecting the delicate buds, “I’ve never seen so many roses.”

Also enamored by the colorful blooms was her 8-year-old daughter, Anna, who lagged behind her parents taking the time to smell each rose bush.

“The pink ones smell the best,” she announced.

“Why’s that?” her mother asked.

“‘Cause it’s my favorite color,” she said breaking into a quick twirl.
“She’s training to be the next queen,” her mother quipped.

The dress of 1992 Rose Festival queen Kristie Hardin sits on display for all to see at the Rose Center museum Sunday in Tyler.
After strolling the garden, visitors went upstairs to the Tyler Rose Museum to admire the handsewn, jeweled costumes, many dating back to 1935.

Little girls stared up at the piles and piles of fabric draped over mannequins in the museum display cases, dreaming of what their reign would be like. Former rose queens reminisced as they walked the museum halls telling stories to their friends and family about when they were rose queen.

“It’s a sort of fantasy, with queens and duchesses, and kingdoms. It’s beautiful and fun, but most of all it is good for Tyler,”Mrs. Travis said.
