The 74th Texas Rose Festival, "Nature's Majesty," officially began Thursday morning, when Rose Queen Grace Hartley Ramey and TRF President E.W. Clawater III cut the ribbon at the Rose Garden Center, 420 Rose Park Drive, Tyler.
The Rose Festival will continue through Sunday, with Queen Grace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ramey III of Tyler, reigning over the festivities. Members of her court are Duchess of the Rose Growers Amanda Joan Henson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Henson of Chandler, ladies-in-waiting, out-of-town duchesses, escorts and attendants.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Miss Ramey and other Rose Festival dignitaries will tour the Rose Show at the Rose Garden Center, followed by the Palette of Roses Art League's Art Show in the Mayfair Building at the East Texas Fairgrounds.
Thousands of people attend the Texas Rose Festival each year, viewing the pomp and pageantry as Tyler salutes the rose and the rose-growing industry, and also contributing to Tyler's economy.
This year promises to be no different, said Justin Turner, vice president of tourism for the Tyler Convention & Visitors Bureau.
"The Rose Festival gives us an economic impact of $2.2 million," Turner said, quoting the number from last year's festival. "We expect at least that this year."
That number includes the amount spent on hotels, festival tickets, food, fuel and tips. The average day visitor spends $40.48. The average night visitor spends $102.99. The bureau arrives at these numbers using a formula from the Texas Department of Economic Development.
