Amanda Joan Henson
Duchess Of The Rose Growers Amanda Joan Henson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Henson of Chandler. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Henson of Tyler and Jane Ford of Chandler and Clay Ford of Tyler. She is a sophomore elementary education major attending The University of Texas at Tyler. She previously attended Tyler Junior College where she was named to the Dean’s List.
Miss Henson is a graduate of Brownsboro High School where she was a member of the National Honor Roll for four years and named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students each of the four years. She was also a member of the Brownsboro Golden Girl Drill Team for four years where she was elected lieutenant her junior year and captain her senior year.
Miss Henson was recognized at numerous dance competitions throughout high school including being chosen to dance with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders during one of their half-time performances. She was a dance solo winner at the San Antonio American Dance Competition, and, as a result, was invited to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. She was dance solo winner at the Galveston Festival Dance Competition and was invited again to participate in the Macy’s parade.
Miss Henson’s family has a long history in the rose growing business in this region. Her great-grandfather, D.O. Ford, was owner of the Lakeview Rose Nursery, one of the first rose nurseries in East Texas dating back to 1920. Ownership of the Lakeview Rose Nursery passed on to her grandfather, Clay Ford, upon his return from the war and continues to the present. Clay Ford was past president of the Texas Rose Research Foundation and was involved in rose procurement for many Rose Parades and Rose Festivals. Her uncle, John Ford, was also past president of the Rose Research Foundation.
Tyler relatives who have participated in past Rose Festivals include her cousin, Marla Beth Ford, 1982 duchess of the rose growers; and her mother, Donna Ford Henson, who has worked at the Rose Garden and has volunteered and served at many of the Queen’s Teas throughout her high school years. The Ford family has a long history of participation in Rose Parades and Rose Festival functions. Local family members include her grandmother, Jane Ford of Chandler; her grandfather, Clay Ford of Tyler; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Henson of Tyler; her uncle, Rick Ford of Chandler; her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Henson of Chandler; her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Henson of Chandler and her uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Jeff West of Athens. Having grown up in this part of Tyler’s heritage, Miss Henson said she is truly honored to be chosen as the 2007 duchess of the rose growers and feels it fulfills her lifetime dream.
