Readers Relishing Rainy Days
Everett Taylor
Some avid readers often may have been heard saying they like a rainy day because it provides perfect conditions for "curling up with a good book."

People so inclined might be among the happiest in East Texas during the current remarkable string of rainy days so far in 2007, already extending through the early weeks of summer.

It might be interesting to know if the often inclement weather might have had any impact one way or the other on participation in the Tyler Public Library's Summer Reading Club that officially started June 4.

One thing that certainly has been appropriate with all of the water this year is the theme, "Sail away with the Summer Reading Club!"

Perhaps utilizing the rainy weather experience thus far, the latest pitch from the Library is: "There's still time for sailors to get on board! The Summer Reading Club is riding the high seas and it's easy for all kids and adults to participate."

That can be done by picking up a time log from the library or any Bookmobile Stop by July 26. Then keep track of the time you spend reading. When the 15-hour mark is reached, turn in a completed time log at the library and select a free book off the "Sail Away" Bookcart.

Waiting until July 26 to register would be cutting it a little thin, because the last day to turn in time logs is July 27.

This is not just for children, it might be important to stress. Children and adults will use the same time log. Children who are not reading independently can still participate by being read to for 15 hours.

Books and reading promotions are provided by the Friends of the Tyler Public Library, Target Distribution Center in Tyler, and donations from the public.

Another point of interest to the public: The Summer Reading Club and all activities are free, and no registration is required, except for groups.

Whether the rainy conditions continue or not, the long July days provide a lot of good reading hours.

To cap off the event, a Summer Reading Club Wrap Up Party will be held July 27, featuring Balloonist Mr. Jazzz as a special guest with presentations at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Taylor Auditorium at the Library, 201 South College, in Tyler.

"Everyone is invited to celebrate another successful Summer Reading Club!" officials indicated. The Wrap Up Party is for readers of all ages.

Certificates, prizes and snacks also will be featured in addition to the entertainment. Everyone is welcome, but groups must make reservations, officials said.

The "Sail Away" theme also carries over to the July exhibit at the Library, the Tyler Yacht Club's "All things nautical."

The August Library exhibit will consist of artifacts and photographs of firefighting through the years, presented by the East Texas Historical Fire Society.

The ETHFS previously has had Library displays during the month of November, so the August showing this year represents a change. Exhibit objects will be featured on both the first and second floors of the library.
